U.S. soldier Frank Dux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) has come to Hong Kong to be accepted into the Kumite, a highly secret and extremely violent martial-arts competition. Sheldon tells everybody that I told him a story of how I fought these events and he thought that would make a great movie and all this kind of stuff. But I'm curious, getting back to what you were saying earlierand what to ultimately led to that story you describedat what point was the producer Mark DiSalle convinced that Jean-Claude would work? "Bloodsport" follows Frank Dux, an American martial artist serving in the military, who decides to leave the army to compete in a martial arts tournament in Hong Kong where fights to the death can occur. We're not friends [anymore] and he does everything in his power to try and paint me as being a nutball or a kook because of it.Blake Harris: That's why I wanted to focus this piece on you, so you can tell the story in your own words.Frank Dux: So now you're starting to hear the real truth of the matter, you know what I mean? No, never. I'll tell you one thing: When I was there, I got a standing ovation. Jean-Claude saw Menahem on the street, did a U-Turn and said, "Hey Menahem, remember me? And he showed up and said, "I see he didn't show up." They didn't have any proper uniforms. So I have all these memories of falling down stairs and crawling on my knees. Bloodsport was produced by Cannon Films and released by Warner Bros. on 26 February 1988. He's in a documentary saying this. So Frank put me on the phone with Jean-Claude and that was the first time I ever spoke to him. Blake Harris: That story in the L.A. Times was pretty brutal. So we pitched him Legionnaire, gave him the treatment and Ed went for it.Blake Harris: You mentioned that Columbia passed on Legionnaire because it didn't "stick with the Van Damme formula." This was significant not only because he wrote the screenplay for Bloodsport, but also because Dux had said some unflattering things about the writer. One of the key sequences in the film finds Task Force X sent to free Rick Flag from an enemy camp. Then we needed someone different to play the Chuck Norris role. I was afraid to taste it, because I'm allergic to shellfish. In fact, Midway Games attempted to license Van Damme's image for the game. And on it, they didn't even spell my name correctly. I don't remember in detail what our first interaction was like, but we just kind of hit it off.Blake Harris: Was it weird for you at all, as a Vietnam veteran, to be working on a book about the war that was written by someone who hadn't been there?Sheldon Lettich: Well, I didn't know that at the time. So those are the three elements. We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Jean-Claude Van Damme." You wanted to help him be successful. And that's what I found out later in life. So you know what that means. The other thing is that Jean-Claude, like I said, he had this uncanny way he looked. These guys, after brutally going at each other, now they were just laughing it off. He was good at stiff karate moves, but that was it. howdidthisgetmade@earwolf.com Episodes The Specialist LIVE! Blake Harris: You had mentioned earlier on that Bloodsport sat on the shelf for two yearsFrank Dux: Yeah, for two years it sat on the shelf. But he had a great imagination, he had good ideas and he knew the martial arts world pretty well. But Michael Dudikoff is like 6'2," and the problem was they wanted to film in Asia. And he was just a different person. So I wrote the script and gave it to a guy named Jacov Bresler. This is like 1979 and he wanted to put together some kind of theatrical piece about Vietnam veterans. Does that even look the same? And at this point in time I don't think it's going to happen.Blake Harris: Ah, too bad. And he did that to Sheldon several times. It's the amazing tale of Frank Dux, a Caucasian martial artist who fought in (and won) a ruthless secret tournament that's held only once every five years. He said, "To be the best, you've gotta fight the best, kid." Well, about the only thing they showed was a trophy receipt.Blake Harris: Which they claimed was evidence that the trophy you won was "at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley? Both of them wanted to be the cop.Blake Harris: That's so funny (though it makes sense).Sheldon Lettich: It just couldn't be worked out so the project fell by the wayside until they got Stallone and Wesley Snipes to be in it. I kid you not.Blake Harris: So you weren't some kind of jiujutsu prodigy?Frank Dux: Not at all. These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. That's water off my back. And then he did a kick that missed his face by like two inches. This is the kind of bond we had. Blake Harris: So we know how Sheldon entered the picture, but how does Jean-Claude Van Damme become involved with Bloodsport?Frank Dux: Oh, Jean-Claude tells this crazy story. Although there is no convenient way to verify each and every detail connected with this story, the editors have verified enough of the basic facts to feel confident in publishing it. It was a horrible film. And if Jean-Claude had found out that I really was theat that time, the real force, if you wouldthat was giving him all these elements, Sheldon's usefulness would have been short-lived. None of it.Blake Harris: InterestingFrank Dux: And Shoto Tanemura, he says he's never heard of a Dukes or a Tanaka? Oh yeah! And then one day I get invited down to the Long Beach Invitationals. The red one, the blue one, the black one. And I was writing for Stallone at the time and I actually asked Jean-Claude for some help with some of the dialogue for a script I was working on.Blake Harris: I imagine that this was during that timeabout two years or sowhen Bloodsport just kind of sat there on the shelves. And I said, "Jean-Claude, that's bullshit. That's how Frank and I met.Blake Harris: Do you remember what your first meeting was like?Sheldon Lettich: We hit it off right away. You see my point? A college football comedy, of all things, that took place at a black college in Texas during the 60s.Blake Harris: I think that also earns "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] Maybe. But I didn't sleep with a reporter beforehand and I certainly didn't break into my instructor's house and steal a sword. He was a little too old at the time. Then we started meeting on a regular basis over at the VA hospital in Westwood. We Hate Movies podcast did Timecop for one of their eps, and likewise, it is one of their best eps. And that relationship led to other things down the road, as you know, but meanwhile my script Firebase was going around. No. It was offered to him and Seagal. And so we had a great time. That's what really happened. And I'd imitate him.Blake Harris: Do you remember how old you were around this time?Frank Dux: I was 11 years old. That's not even my name. In fact we did the casting at my apartment. Live from Largo in L.A. they get into Samuel L. They always gave me one camera to kind of use and shoot it the way I'd like to see shot. So there would be one shot where you would see both brothers in the same shot, kind of talking to one another and then all the other shots were either close-ups or over-the-shoulders done with a double. "We have no recollection of such a tournament," said Kenneth Wilson, a spokesman for the Ministry of Sports in the Bahamas. Jean-Claude is poison!! But then Menahem decided he didn't want to make the movie.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: In his words, I'm quoting, "Jean-Claude can't even play one character, how do you expect him to play two?" And I just want to end it right now." So I said, "As long as you're going to have martial arts, why not get Frank?" But the fights in the story were all real. He went in and redid it. Well, here's the reality of the situation. We expect embellishment, we condone narrative condensation and we celebrate character-driven points of view. So I just started calling it Bloodsport, and that was useful because this type of fighting, it had a different name depending on where you were. The piece, entitled "Kumite: A Learning Experience," was written by editor John Stewart and begins with the following note: From time to time, Black Belt learns of unusual events or occurrences in the martial arts; events thateither because of their nature or because they occurred in the distant pastcannot be easily verified. What is he, a walking dictionary of a secret society? And I actually helped John do the casting. ).Blake Harris: That's great. Occasionally he'd come by the studio. Jean-Claude was a big Stallone fan?Sheldon Lettich: Still is. And I said, "Okay, after dailies, I'll meet you up there." It was also seen by Viacom. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. And the story there, which I've told many times, came from Frank telling me about his exploits. Over the centuries, however, these . And Leon was going to star in the movie, which we called The White House All Stars with the "White House" being a frat house at this college where all the football players lived. But the truth is, I had already written a script called Enter the Ninja. I told Menahem that the new cut of Bloodsport was great and I thought it was going to do really well. Jean-Claude had a three picture deal with Menahem at Cannon and Leon was very impressed with Jean-Claude; we all thought this was a match made in heaven. This got the people at Cannon re-thinking Bloodsport and they decided to do a test run on the west coast. And I said, "Hey, asshole, I'm right over here." And Menahem was dead set against it.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: [Laughing at the memory] His word for Jean-Claude was "poison." KUMITE! During the tournament, Dux battles an array of international fighters from various schools of martial arts. I'm not gonna stoop to his level. KUMITE! And he said yeah. Or, better yet, where does that phrase come from?Frank Dux: Oh, that's easy. It sold well at the box office, grossing $65 million on a budget of $1.5-2.3 million. And we loved each other at that point.Blake Harris: So you guys were really closeFrank Dux: Yeah, this'll show you how close we were and tie back to what I was saying right before. Except the version that Stallone had in mind was for a present day French Foreign Legion movie about two American buddies who enlist. And there'd be a bunch of people there with phones to record it, so we don't want this to happen.Blake Harris: Speaking of that screening, Frank had mentioned that you were crushed. Okay? That editorial attributes statements to me that I never made. Bloodsport wasn't an Oscar-worthy film in any manner (the original cut was deemed unwatchable and a re-edit was completed before release), but Van Damme's stoic charisma and the memorable. And we ended up settling. Not about Jean-Claude per se, but about releasing Bloodsport in theaters?Sheldon Lettich: Menahem was persuaded by Samuel Hadida, who had released No Retreat, No Surrender in France (where it was called Karate Tiger) and been a fan of Jean-Claude's ever since then. And in that way it works, I can see that. With any film that's based on a true story, there are always questions and curiosities about authenticity. You know, there's a certain romanticism to that. We do it your way. But there was a Writer's Guild arbitration and the Writer's Guild ended up giving him a co-story credit.Blake Harris: Tell me a little bit about Legionnaire. I said, "You're trying to prove to yourself that you could do it. So any time you want to know who an agent is you can just go down there and file a request? Originally he'd planned for it to take place in present day, but I just thought that if you've got all of these fighters coming from all of the world like they did in Bloodsportand basically he was just trying to do a different version of Bloodsportthat it would make things more interesting if, for example, this took place in the 1920s because then it becomes really difficult for all these fighters from different parts of the world to journey to this contest.Blake Harris: So Frank was originally hired to write the script for The Quest?Sheldon Lettich: Frank, and they actually put another writer on with Frank. This thingwhatever it was calledit was really cool and it would be a cool way to meet chicks.Blake Harris: And how did you go from passively enjoying these things to actual participating and learning how to fight?Frank Dux: I guess one of the things that helped push me in that direction was that I befriended a kid named Grant who had it far worse than myself. Back when I first started working with Stallone, my agent had told me to bring an idea to pitch him for a script. Either way, it's fair to say that filmgoers are a pretty forgiving lot. Menahem had also seen the little 16mm movie [Firefight] I directed and was going to give me my first directing deal.Blake Harris: For you to direct a Lone Wolf McQuade sequel starring Leon Isaac Kennedy and Chuck Norris?Sheldon Lettich: Yes, except that Chuck didn't want to do it.
